Feb 10, 2014: Reviewing mummification!

Today in class we watched a short video about the ancient Egyptian's beliefs about life and death.  It was so short we watched it twice to make sure everyone understood it! While watching students had to answer three questions, the questions are below with the answers in red...

  1. Were the ancient Egyptians obsessed with death? No they were obsessed with life.  They mummified their dead so that they would be ensured a good afterlife in which they could live forever!
  2. Why did the Egyptians believe they could achieve immortality? They believed they could achieve immortality because Osiris was killed by his brother and torn to pieces. His wife gathered the pieces and put him back together, after which Osiris rose from the dead and lived again.
  3. What did the Egyptians put in their tombs? Everything! Jewelry, furniture, pets, food, servants, gold, etc.  Whatever one might need to enjoy a good afterlife.

After watching the video and answering the questions, students worked in their groups to put together a list of all of the steps of mummification.  The group with the most comprehensive list will get to skip note taking for one class period! (I will print them out the notes).  Good luck!
