Jan 21, 2014: Hammurabi's Code

We finally had a normal social studies class today! It feels like it has been forever since that has happened!  We discussed what the next two weeks will look like and then jumped back into Mesopotamia.  We will likely finish up Mesopotamia next week and will have a unit test either at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week.

Today's we began discussing "Mesopotamia's Legacy", or what they are very well known for.  The first discussion point was Hammurabi's code.  Hammurabi's ruled the Babylonian empire after uniting the cities of Sumer.  He created what we know as the first set of written laws (or at least the first ones we have found!).  These laws were based on the concept of "an eye for an eye" and a class system.  The class system means that punishments were more or less severe depending on where the victim and perpetrator lie in the social and economic classes.  We had some AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME discussions about how Hammurabi's code compares to our laws today and whether they were fair or not.

This is a big topic so we will finish up talking about this tomorrow and will start talking about cuneiform.....
